The Durango-Silverton Railroad DepotAnother perk provided by the Rv Park were tickets for two on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. We decided to take the train ride to Silverton and return on the train. The forty-five mile round trip takes all day but it is worth the time, the scenery is beautiful
The railroad construction began in 1881 and the labor force numbered around five hundred men, many of them new arrivals to the United States. They performed the often dangerous work for an average daily pay of $2.25 which was considered a decent wage at that time.
Rails were laid from Durango to Silverton through the Animas Valley and up to Rockwood by late fall, and work progressed through the harsh winter of 1881-1882. Construction crews reached Silverton in July 1882, completing the link from Durango to Silverton in an incredible "eleven" months.
Since they are no longer mining silver in Silverton, the train now serves as a tourist attraction and runs year round. For anyone visiting the Durango, this is a "Must See" attraction.
