Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge RR Day Six

Train Heading Back South
When the train arrives in Silverton it it heading north and must be heading south to make the trip back to Durango. They don't have a round table in Silverton so they turn the train around by driving it forward then backing it up and so forth till it's heading back south. Tricky huh?

Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge RR Day Five

Pretty View From Train

I know there are a lot of pictures but please bear in mind that we took the train ride to Silverton and then back to Druango. On the way back to Durango we were able to see things we didn't see on the way up.

Deep Valley
The biggest mistake made on this trip was that they didn't take my camera away from me. I took a lot of good pictures and I feel the urge to share them.

The Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge RR

The Durango-Silverton Railroad Depot

Another perk provided by the Rv Park were tickets for two on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. We decided to take the train ride to Silverton and return on the train. The forty-five mile round trip takes all day but it is worth the time, the scenery is beautiful

The railroad construction began in 1881 and the labor force numbered around five hundred men, many of them new arrivals to the United States. They performed the often dangerous work for an average daily pay of $2.25 which was considered a decent wage at that time.

Rails were laid from Durango to Silverton through the Animas Valley and up to Rockwood by late fall, and work progressed through the harsh winter of 1881-1882. Construction crews reached Silverton in July 1882, completing the link from Durango to Silverton in an incredible "eleven" months.

Since they are no longer mining silver in Silverton, the train now serves as a tourist attraction and runs year round. For anyone visiting the Durango, this is a "Must See" attraction.
