Goliad, Texas

One of Texas' oldest municipalities, the area was inhabited long before recorded history. Early Spanish explorers list an Aranama Indian Village at the site, then called Santa Dorortea. In 1749 Spain established a mission and was custom, a nearby "Persido" or fort for protection.

"Remember Goliad" became a Texas Revolution battle cry honoring Colonel James W. Fannin, Jr. and his men who were massacred at Goliad. A monument marks the grave of Colonel Fannin and 342 men who had surrendered to Mexican forces during the Texas Revolution and were massacred at the order of General Santa Anna on Palm Sunday morning, March 27, 1863

Today we're going to Kingsville, Texas and tour the world famous King Ranch.

King Ranch located in south Texas between Corpus Christi and Brownsville is one of the world's largest ranches, larger than Rhode Island. It's the largest Ranch in the United States. The 825,000 acres or 1,289 mile Ranch was founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King sprawls across six Texas counties. The Ranch was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

Mathis Parade

We were going to take it easy for a few days and get caught up laundry and a few other things around the "house".

We found a very good Mexican restaurant across the street and all the food they serve is made fresh there everyday and the prices were very reasonable. We were going over for lunch when we saw a parade of a few units coming down the street. We have no idea what the parade is for but we had to watch since we could not cross the street.

After the parade was over we went for some lunch. We had a real good Mexican lunch, OLE!!

We're going to rest up and get some things done and next week we plan to go to the famous King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas. This ranch is the largest one in the United States and the second largest in the world.

Corpus Christi, Texas

We drove to Corpus Christi to see the Gulf and see if we could find a good seafood place. My niece had recommended a place called "Snoopy's" and we thought we'd give it a try. As it turned out the food was real good even though the place was not real fancy.

Mathis, Texas Day Two

Beeville Court House

We took a short drive to the KOA by Lake Corpus Christi to visit with Lee and Carma. We had called about getting a site there but all they have are 30 amp sites and they had nothing that would accommodate a 40 foot motor home. When we got there I'm glad we didn't try to go there. The sites are small, close to each other and have trees all over the place including the roads into the park and to the sites too.

We took a short ride to Beeville Texas to make a "Wally World" run. Well guess what??? when I first entered the Navy in 1954, Beeville was my first duty station. It was a Naval Air Station which was being reopened to train jet pilots. It's now closed and has been turned over to the state of Texas for a prison.

The trip from Montgomery to Mathis was not bad. the roads were good, but when we got close to San Antonio the traffic became a nightmare.

We are parked in Mathis Motor Inn and RV Park. It's not a big park but it is nice and quiet and the sites are long, large and level. It's also a Passport America Park.

We're On The Road Again Texas Bound

After spending enjoyable Holidays with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, the time has come for us to get back on the road. We're heading to Mathis, Texas to spend some time with our good friends, Lee and Carma. Sometime in April we're supposed to meet Don and Betty to head out to Durango, CO to workkamp next summer. We're really looking forward to getting back to Durango, there are a lot of interesting places to visit
